ABOUT NATIONAL LAW CONCLAVE
The three pillars of a democratic structure are the legislative, the executive, and the judiciary. While the legislature makes the law and the executive implements it, it behoves the judiciary to uphold and preserve the majesty of the law. What is more, while the first two are interdependent, the judicial system is a completely independent pillar. It interprets the law, resolves disputes, and administers justice. Simultaneously, it acts’as the ultimate guardian of the constitution. That is why the judiciary plays the most important role in ensuring good governance in a democracy.
The world is changing — ‘and changing very fast. Aspects like harmonisation of environmental protection and sustainable development, contemporary perspectives on the protection of constitutional values, the right to privacy in an interconnected internet world, cultural diversity, a gender-just society, surrogacy, honour killing, live-in relationship etc., which were either unheard of or were not given due importance a few years back, agitate the society now. It is but obvious that the constitution and the law cannot change so fast to keep pace with societal changes. The citizens, therefore, look up more and more to the judiciary for a dynamic interpretation of the law in consonance with the changing expectations of the society, which may not always be possible.
This National Law Conclave will provide a platform to erudite speakers from judiciary, law, and academics to debate and discuss the role of the judiciary in the changing world. The participants will get a vivid and panoramic view of how the judiciary deals with the changes in societal expectations and what lies ahead.
