An internationally acclaimed expert in the domain of Human Resource Management and a well-known management Guru, Prof. Biswajeet Pattanayak is the Founder and President of ASBM University. With an exceptionally enriching career spanning over three decades, he has held rewarding positions like Professor of IIM – Indore & Lucknow, Director of Indian Institute of Bank Management (an institution of Reserve Bank of India), Vice-Chancellor of KIIT University and Group HRD Head of the Essar Group. He had also worked for the steel behemoth Steel Authority of India Ltd. (SAIL) and taught at National Institute for Industrial Engineering (NITIE), Mumbai. He has been awarded Ph.D. and D.Litt. in Organisational Behaviour and D. Sc. in Management Science, and is a Fellow of All India Management Association (AIMA), New Delhi.
Prof. Pattanayak combines, in an exceptional manner, all the qualities of a , a wonderful teacher, an excellent trainer, a consultant to industry, a prolific writer and an accomplished researcher. He had become a full Professor of Indian Institute of Management (IIM) at the very young age of 35 and went on to adorn the position of Director of the RBI run Indian Institute of Bank Management at the age of 37, a rare distinction indeed.
The Hon’ble President of India has appointed Prof. Pattanayak as a member of the Courts (the highest bodies of Governance) of Central University of Rajasthan and Guru Ghasidas Central University, Chhattisgarh. He is an Advisor to the Union Public Service Commission, Government of India. He is the Mentor of the World Bank assisted Centre of Excellence in Human Capital Development of Utkal University under Odisha Higher Education Programme for Excellence and Equity. The Hon’ble Chief Minister of Odisha has appointed him as a mentor under the ‘Mo School’ initiative of Government of Odisha. Earlier, he was involved in formulation of the Odisha State Education Policy having been appointed by Government of Odisha as a member of the State Level Committee. Prof. Pattanayak also has been a panelist in consultative panel on National Education Policy, 2020 of Niti Ayog, Govt. of India.
Prof. Pattanayak is an institution builder. He left his earlier coveted positions to establish Asian School of Business Management (ASBM) at Bhubaneswar in 2006. During the last 14 years, ASBM has emerged as a top ranking b-school of the country with international accreditation by Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP), USA. The Institute has since been upgraded as a unitary state private university established by Government of Odisha.
An avid researcher, Prof. Pattanayak has to his credit 104 research publications in national and international referred journals and 27 books. His books have been published by well-known publishers like Prentice Hall, Sage, Excel Books and Bloomsbury, while his papers get regularly published in reputed international journals like Organisation Development Journal (USA), HRD International (UK), International Journal of Psychology (UK), International Journal of HRD & Management (UK), Development and Learning in Organizations (Emerald Publishing, UK) etc. His books ‘Creating Performing Organisation’ and ‘Human Resource Management’ are global best sellers of Amazon.com. He has presented a number of papers and also chaired sessions both in national and international conferences. Eight scholars have been awarded Ph.D under his guidance and supervision.
Prof. Pattanayak is popularly known as the ‘LAGAAN Professor’ after his innovation in teaching through introduction of the famous ‘Lagaan’ movie in the course curriculum of IIM Indore. He conducted, on invitation, a Workshop titled ‘Lagaan workshop on Team-building and Leadership’ at the 62nd Annual Convention of International Council of Psychologists at Jinan, China, which was attended by educationists across the world and received the highest rating. He is a popular trainer, and has conducted a large number of senior management programmes for more than hundred companies. He has also undertaken several consulting assignments for many companies and the World Bank as well.
He is the Chair, Region-10 (South Asia), Accreditation Council for Business Schools & Programs (ACBSP), USA. Earlier, he was an elected member to the Council of Management of All India Management Association (AIMA), New Delhi and to the Board of National HRD Network.
Prof. Pattanayak is a certified evaluator of Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP), USA. He has evaluated a large number of educational institutions as peer team member of NAAC, NBA, and AICTE. He has also served on the faculty selection committees of various universities including the Tata Institute of Social Science.
Prof. Pattanayak has been conferred with several awards and accolades including the most recent one being ‘Life Time Achievement Award 2022’ from World Education Congress, ‘Business Excellence Award 2021 for Education’ (Instituted by ‘Dharitri’ and ‘Orissa Post’) received from Mr. Dharmendra Pradhan, Hon’ble Minister of Education, Skill Development & Entrepreneurship, Govt. of India (Former Union Minister, Petroleum, Natural Gas and Steel). And he also has been recipient of the prestigious Teaching Excellence International Award in June 2016 of Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP) at Atlanta, USA, as one among top ten management educators of the world. He has also received the Deccan Herald Award for Best Teacher in Management – 2008, Dewang Mehta Award for Best Professor in HRM by Dewang Mehta Foundation – 2008, Deccan Herald Best Teacher in HR & OB Award– 2005, Srijani Creativity Award of SAIL, Sulzer Man of Industrial Engineering National Award in Human Resource of NITIE, and the Career Award of AICTE. He has been honoured with citation in Reference India, Indo-European Who’s Who, Asian-American Who’s Who, Who’s Who in the World (Marquis), Asia-Men and Women of Achievement, and Leading Scientist of the world by International Biographical Centre, Cambridge, England.
